Quit Smoking at Work
Pacific Heartbeat and Tala Pasifika went into the heart of Mangere in June 2015 with the goal of helping a Pacific workforce to become smokefree.
Supercheap Auto has a staff of 48 who work at their site in Mangere, with just over half of them being Pacific (26). Twelve of those Pacific workers smoke (9 male and 3 female). Having already established a great working relationship with Supercheap Auto by providing nutrition advice to their staff, we thought they would be the perfect launch pad for a workplace smokefree project.
Supercheap Auto was very accommodating in allowing our team to engage with theirs. Having their management on board was key to making it work. We were also buoyed by the fact that research suggests people are more likely to stop smoking in a group based environment than trying to stop smoking on their own.
We wanted to be able to capture the smokers stop smoking journey so we could share it with other workplaces. The idea was to present a real stop smoking journey of real people. So, we made the decision to document and film the process by following three of the workers, Peter, Ben and Theo – all Pacific and all at different stages of their journey to become smokefree.
After four months, we came to the end of their stop smoking sessions and the completion of filming around our wonderful volunteers. The following video captures their own personal story and uncovers reasons why they started smoking and their reason(s) for stopping. All intertwined with the highs and lows of trying to stop smoking.
By sharing these personal stories, we’re hopeful that other workplaces will take up the stop smoking training but, more importantly, they encourage other Pacific smokers to think about their own ‘stop smoking journey’.
