Tips for Quitting
The following tips may help you to become smokefree:
- Make a decision to quit.
- If you think a support group would help, ask if your school or suburb has one.
- Have a plan of action, set a quit date and stick to it.
- Get help. If you prefer face to face support, talk to your GP, nurse or pharmacist for advice or contact pacific quit services for advice.
- List your reasons for quitting and keep the list in a visible area to keep as a reminder if you are ever attempted to smoke.
- Find someone who agrees to help and support you if it gets tough.
- Get rid of all your smoking stuff like lighters, matches, ashtrays and tell people what you're doing.
- Plan what you are going to do when you crave a cigarette because of stress, boredom or hunger. Remember, withdrawl symptoms such as anxiety and sleeplessness can be difficult to deal with but they only last a few days.
- Drink lots of water, eat healthy foods, and get some physical exercise.
- Celebrate your accomplishments.
- Even though it is hard, remember quitting is the best thing you can do for yourself.
